20 birders surveyed Huntley Meadows in Fairfax County this morning. Our group
from the Northern Virginia Bird Club was led by Dixie Summers and me. Several
other accomplished birders also joined us and helped us find 50 bird species.
In the woods just before the boardwalk we found the Red-headed Woodpeckers that
have been around this season. They were actively flying around between the
trees and also in and out of the marsh,so it was difficult to count them
exactly, but we thought that a tally of nine individuals was reasonable. At
the beginning of the boardwalk, we found an American Tree Sparrow. There were
also several Rusty Blackbirds seen along the boardwalk. We all enjoyed some of
the ducks that have come in recently including Gadwall, Northern Shovelers, and
Green-winged Teal. Another highlight was a Winter Wren holding court on top of
a woodpile at the end of the boardwalk. This was a life bird for one birder in
the group.
