Thirteen people came out for a walk at Huntley Meadows sponsored by the
Northern Virginia Bird Club. Our focus today was on butterflies and
dragonflies, but we did not ignore the birds. Highlights included various baby
birds begging for meals including Red-winged Blackbirds, an Eastern Phoebe, and
Barn Swallows. We saw a Bald Eagle,an Osprey. a Great Egret, an Acadian
Flycatcher, and Killdeer. Butterflies included Tiger Swallowtails, Spicebush
Swallowtails, a Common Buckeye, Summer Azures, Cabbage White, Red Admirals,
Great Spangled Fritillaries, Fiery Skipper, Dun Skipper, Silver-spotted
Skipper, Little Wood-Satyrs, a Northern Pearly-eye, and Pearl Crescents,
Dragonflies included Common Whitetails, Great Blue Skimmers, Slaty Skimmers,
Common Pondhawks, a Needham's Skimmer, Black Saddlebags, Swamp Darners,
Spangled Skimmers, and Blue Dashers,
