The following is a trip report by Toby Hardwick for Saturday's NVBC's field
trip to Leopold's Preserve in Haymarket, Prince William county:

This morning members of The Northern Virginia Bird Club hiked the marsh loop
and woodlands loop in search of migrating warblers, sparrows and with hopes of
finding Sora and Virginia Rail in the marsh. We were greeted by two Black
Throated Green warblers and some Yellow-rumped and Western Palm warblers moving
through the trees. Upon reaching the observation platform Canada geese, Wood
duck, Mallard and several American Black duck were spotted in the marsh as well
as flying in. Shortly thereafter a small flock of Green winged teal landed.
Proceeding around the marsh vigilant for a Sora or Virginia rail call, Swamp
and Song sparrow were spotted in and along the hedge rows bordering the marsh
along with a flyover of a single Wilson's snipe . A distant immature Red
Shoulder hawk as well as a late Green heron flyover were also observed. On our
exit from the marsh first of season for many Ruby Crowned kinglet and Dark Eyed
junco were spotted along with a couple of Magnolia warbler. After checking a
roadside field for migrating sparrows we proceeded to the woodlands trail where
a Tennessee warbler was perched atop dying sumac in a field. It was quickly
joined by two companions. Large number of Western, Eastern and Yellow-rumped
warbler as well as late Indigo Bunting were also seen. A mix of sun, wind and
rain greeted us as we headed into the woods. We followed a large flock of
Cedar waxwing to the woods edge and found the best mixed flock of the day. Two
Blue headed vireo and FOS Golden Crowned kinglet were amongst the flock. The
flock was dispersed by a cruising Sharp Shinned hawk then a second accipiter
flyover after a good 15 minutes of birding. Back at the parking lot two Common
raven were seen riding the winds aloft.
