Sixteen birders from the Northern Virginia Bird Club enjoyed a morning of
birding at Mason Neck State Park, the Great Marsh Trail, and Pohick Bay. The
morning started out a little chilly, but it soon warmed up. As a group, we
tallied 60 species. The highlights at Mason Neck included a lonely Tree
Swallow hanging around the visitor center, a pair of Wood Ducks, at least a
dozen Bald Eagles, Hermit Thrushes, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and an Eastern
Towhee, At the Great Marsh Trail we found about 260 Tundra Swans, a pair of
Green-winged Teal, and American Black Ducks. At Pohick Bay the ducks were
mostly far away, but we were able to find the Eurasian Wigeon, three Ospreys,
Horned Grebes, Redheads and Canvasbacks.
Next Saturday we will be at Silver Lake in Haymarket, VA. All are welcome to
join us. http://www.nvabc.org/trips.htm
