Twenty birders from the Northern Virginia Bird Club came out to enjoy a
brilliant cool morning at Occoquan Bay NWR in Prince William County. The walk
was led by Phil Silas and me with additional help from Marc Ribaudo. These NVBC
walks are free, open to all and require no pre-registration. It was not
overwhelmingly birdy at the refuge, but we had a nice diversity of birds as we
tallied 63 species. Some highlights included two separate groups of Wild
Turkeys on the trails, a well seen Yellow-billed Cuckoo, both kinglets, plus
Bay-breasted, Cape May, Magnolia, Palm, Black-throated Green and Yellow-rumped
Warblers. We also encountered FOS Song Sparrows and a Swamp Sparrow. It was
also interesting to watch some young American Goldfinches being fed by an
adult. Marc saw a lone Bobolink fly away from the field near the pond. We also
had some nice insects spotted along the trails. A Fine-lined Emerald dragonfly
was a lifer for me. Blue-faced Meadowhawks, Eastern Pondhawks and Black
Saddlebags were also around. Notable butterflies included Sleepy Orange,
Viceroy, Painted lady, Common Buckeye, Red-banded Hairstreak, and Red-spotted
Purple.
