Seven birders joined the Northern Virginia Bird Club trip to Silver Lake Park
in Haymarket. We also visited North Fork Wetland (AKA Camp Snyder). We were
ready for a bit of rain, but we only experienced a few sprinkles and the sun
even made an appearance a couple of times. It ended up being a nice morning
with 53 bird species total between the two locations. We walked around the
picnic area at Silver Lake and then walked around the lake and later visited
the quarry. Highlights included Rusty Blackbirds, a singing Chipping Sparrow,
Red-breasted Nuthatches, a Cooper's Hawk, and a Brown Creeper. At the quarry we
saw a pair of Horned Grebes, one of which was almost in full breeding plumage,
nine Redheads and three Lesser Scaup.
North Fork had DC Cormorants, Buffleheads, Northern Pintails, RIng-necked
Ducks, Savannah Sparrows, Killdeer, and a few Yellow-rumped Warblers.
