VA Birders:
This morning, the Northern Virginia Bird Club visited the Clifton Institute on
Blantyre Road in Fauquier county. Led around the property by Bert Harris, we
collectively saw and heard 59 species. We visited two locations -- the main
property around the house and the two lakes and then later in the morning went
over to the Adams pasture.
Our highlights for the morning were , a Yellow Palm Warbler, singing Brown
Thrashers and Fox Sparrow, a big push of Golden-crowned Kinglets, flyovers of
raven and recently arrived Ospreys, plenty of Eastern Phoebes and Eastern
Towhees, and a distantly singing Blue-headed Vireo. Some individuals in our
party also heard Eastern Screech-Owl and Barred Owl.
We then went over to the Adams pasture and added a flock of White-crowned
Sparrows, more Golden-crowned Kinglets, two Brown Creepers, several Eastern
Meadowlarks, a pair each of American Kestrel and Northern Harrier.
On our return drive back to the main house, we added to our list a couple of
sharp-looking Chipping Sparrows and a male Belted Kingfisher.
Later in the morning and early afternoon, David Ledwith and I went to Leopold's
Preserve near Haymarket and found the previously reported American Bittern at
the south end of the marsh buried in a small island of cat tails.
We then went over the Silver Lake Regional Park and found a male Long-tailed
Duck in the quarry lake. Perhaps it is the same individual found at this
location in February. The remarkable number of Long-tailed Ducks passing
through northern Virginia continues.
