VA Birders:
The Northern Virginia Bird Club visited this morning Aquia Landing Park and
Crow's Nest Natural Area Preserve in Stafford county. We collectively found 43
species. A cloudy, overcast morning might have led to a somewhat subdued number
of species overall, but we did manage to find a few interesting birds. Our
highlight of the morning were two vocalizing King Rails at Aquia Landing. Both
times the vocalization was very loud at the edge of the marsh along the
entrance road, but we were unable to actually see the rails. Other highlights
were two Yellow-billed Cuckoos that posed really well at opposite ends of the
park and a very cooperative and singing White-eyed Vireo near the entrance to
the park. There were plenty of Yellow-rumps and Palm Warblers to sort through
as well as a few Brown Thrashers.
We then went over to the boardwalk at Crow's Nest NAP hoping to find Soras.
While a couple of observers in our party found Soras before the start of the
walk in the early AM, our official visit to the boardwalk in the late morning
did not succeed in finding any Soras. We did add Wood Ducks and Hairy
Woodpecker to our morning's list.
