I was at Burke Lake later in the day and I saw many of the same birds
that the NVBC group saw. The only notable bird that I would add to
Steve's list is a Red-breasted Merganser which was swimming around in
the middle of the lake. I also made stops at Kingstowne which had a
couple of Buffleheads and many Ring-necked Ducks and at Huntley Meadows
which had 10 Northern Pintails, 2 Green-winged Teal and a Northern
Shoveler.

Subject: [va-bird] NVBC walk at Burke Lake 7Jan06
Fourteen birders braved the morning chill to look for waterbirds this
morning at Burke Lake. Temperature at 9:00am was about 23 degrees F. By
mid-morning the viewing conditions were excellent and we had good views
of a number of duck species and other waterfowl. The mostly bare woods
were relatively quiet but a number of wintering species popped up to
keep us diverted as we walked along the edge of the lake. A complete
list follows:
Pied-billed grebe 4
Great blue heron ` 3
Canada goose 40
Mallard 20
