VA Birders:
The Northern Virginia Bird Club conducted a bird walk at Conway-Robinson State
Forest in Prince William county near Manassas National Battlefield. The birding
was really slow but we did manage to find 40 species. The walk into the forest
and down the railroad bed was uneventful save for finding a Black Racer coiled
up in a sapling and lots of orb-weavers over the trail. Fortunately, things
picked up when we reached the far northeast corner of the property at the end
of the 2nd growth field and pine grove. Here we found our only significant
mixed species flock of the morning. We found a flock of very active Pine
Warblers, a singing White-eyed Vireo, a Scarlet Tanager, a couple of
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, and a briefly seen but mostly heard Red-breasted
Nuthatch and a Black-and-white Warbler. A few birders also located a
Black-throated Green Warbler, Magnolia Warbler and a Blue-headed Vireo. We
were also surrounded by a very active and vocal colony of Red-headed
Woodpeckers at this end of the park. On the way back to the parking lot, we
noted a flock of Cedar Waxwings and a quick look at a Chestnut-sided Warbler
mixed in with chickadees and a gnatcatcher. Upon reaching the parking lot, we
found a very cooperative Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the trees above the picnic
area.
