Just wanted to report that my Carolina Wrens started building a nest on the
first day of spring! March 20.
By the end of the day on March 21, the nest already looked like a cave on
the shelf chosen in my carport and the female spent the night in there (a
way for female songbirds to ascertain that the nest site is, indeed, safe
before expending a lot of energy producing eggs in that location).
This morning I finally got the chance to check the box in my garden where
I've seen chickadees entering and sure enough--a completed nest, ready for
eggs!!!!
On March 9, I heard a female titmouse making the high-pitched whistle that
I recognized as her call to the male that she was ready to mate. I
spotted her in my Norway Spruce where she was making the whistle and
fluttering
her wings in the proper posture for mating. However, he didn't seem very
interested, or at least not in that location. They both eventually flew high
into a tree and out of sight.
And this morning just before 7 AM, I had a turkey gobbling not far from my
house in the woods for over half an hour!
Sincerely,
Marlene
