On Friday (7/23/11) I broak the Virginia Big Day record for July with 170
species. I started at midnight in Dayton where I found a recently fledged
Barn Owl. Hoping for the Long-eared Owl reported earlier this year I went to
Wimer Mtn. Ln. where I heard Great Horned Owl and Black-billed Cuckoo but
nothing else. I drove to strait creek where it crosses Rt 642 where I picked
up Eastern Screech-Owl, Barred Owl, and Great Horned Owl and took a nap
until 5:15. On my way over to Locust Springs a Northern Saw-whet Owl flew
across the road in front of me and an American Woodcock flew up from the
road. Locust Springs contained all the usual suspects with the exception of
Yellow-rumped Warbler which I have not seen there since late May. Went up
Wimer Mtn. Ln. again, where I found a Brewster's Warbler but no
Golden-winged. I then stopped at Forks of Water, Ramsey's Draft, King Family
Vineyard, Jack Jouett Rd., and Newport News City Park, before getting stuck
in traffic around Newport News and at the Hampton Roads Bridge, costing
about an hour. The CBBT contained a Gull-billed Tern, and two Lesser
Black-backed Gulls. On the Eastern Shore I stopped at ESVNWR, Magotha Rd.,
Willis Wharf. Once I reached Chicoteague around 6:30 some of the more
interesting birds became apparent. The Black-bellied Whistling-Duck that has
been seen all week was present with the Mallards; there were numerous
slightly early Sanderlings on the beach; Pectorial and Stilt Sandpipers; and
a single Canvasback flyover on the causeway at dusk.
