On Sunday morning (Sept 30) I did not relocate the Say's Phoebe seen by K.
Gaskill and D. Ledwith on Saturday, Sept 29 at the Fairfax Co. landfill cap
in Lorton, VA. I spent about three hours slowly driving the roads and
scanning the cap with binos and scope for the phoebe with no success.
However, there were plenty of other fun birds to see! From one vantage
point I counted 23 American kestrels, the majority of which were
concentrated on or near the power line on the east side of the cap. There
were at least a handful more spread out elsewhere, probably several more.
Also of note were peregrine falcon, eastern meadowlark, bobolink, and a
marsh wren tucked into a small patch of cattails.
