4 members of the Northern VA Bird Club met this morning at Jones Point Park in
Alexandria for a mid-week walk. Highlights at this location were 10 Red-necked
Grebes, 3 Fox Sparrows, and a Peregrine Falcon. We also had a nice flyover of
10 Tundra Swans. Several Osprey were also seen.
3 of us moved down the river just a bit to Dyke Marsh. There we were treated to
a flock of about 50 Rusty Blackbirds very close to the entrance to the Haul
Road. 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets were also seen. We added a Horned Grebe in
breeding plumage and a Pied-billed to make it a 3 grebe day. Rich Rieger
continued on and found another Fox Sparrow further down the road.
44 species were seen at both locations. Waterfowl numbers were a bit down, with
Lesser Scaup being the most numerous.
