Hello Birders,
Myself and Ellison Orcutt spent the day birding around Northampton
county visiting
Sunset Beach, Kiptopeake hawk watch platform (with Steve Kolbe, and Ned
Brinkley), Oyster, Cape Charles, Arlington Rd, and ESVNWR.
Highlights included a nice flight of Red Crossbill at Kiptopeake. A single
flock of around 40 birds were seen mid-morning and these alighted briefly
allowing scope views. There was also a single White-winged Crossbill with
this group. I think the day total of Reds was close to 80.
Also seen from the hawk watch platform was a 1st year type Glaucous Gull flying
north along the Bay shore. 2 Cave Swallow and 1 Evening Grosbeak were also
recorded today at Kiptopeake (but we did not see these). We also heard
there was an American White Pelican seen on Fisherman Island in the morning.
We stopped at CBBT Island 1 on the way back to Richmond, and found a female
Common Eider, 18 Black Scoter, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 1 Great Cormorant,
and 2 Slate-colored Junco.
