Bill Williams and I watched for about 5 minutes as an immature Northern Goshawk
crossed the James River and flew over the hawkwatch just after 11:00, offering
very satisfying looks at all field marks. It's our 4th at the site in 19
seasons.
Despite northwest winds of 20+ mph, 43 Turkey Vultures, a Black Vulture, an
immature Bald Eagle and an American Kestrel also passed by. About 10-15 Bald
Eagles and 10 or so Ospreys were also around, but were judged not to be
migrating this morning. Dozens of swallows were on the move and on the nearby
sandbar were 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 71 Bonaparte's Gulls and 139 Royal
Terns. Bill also found a Prairie Warbler.
