The Northern Virginia Bird Club sponsored a walk to Huntley Meadows this
morning. 18 people participated and were treated to a flock of Rusty
Blackbirds in the parking lot as the walk began. As we proceeded to the
marsh, we found the incubating Red-shouldered Hawk on the nest and a male
Wild Turkey accompanied by two hens. A singing Song Sparrow greeted us as
we entered the open marsh as did a small flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers and
a Palm Warbler. Dave Ledwith spotted a Green Heron and posted its location
in an earlier post. We found Pied-billed Grebes, but not the Red-necked, so
it appears to have departed. (Sorry, Gerry- we tried!) There was a nice
variety of waterfowl if in low numbers. Swallows were well-represented with
4 species observed, including Purple Martin. The walk concluded with a seen
and briefly heard Pine Warbler in the parking lot. A tad windy today, but
decent weather.
