Hello Everyone,
I took my family to Occoquan Bay NWR this evening, assuming we could have a
nice evening picnic waiting to see if the reported Sandhill Crane would make an
appearance. This bird has somehow eluded me as a Virginia bird, so is high on
the list of desired species. We were disappointed to find the gates closed at
6:20 when we arrived, despite the refuge hours being until 7:00 PM. Ah well,
we parked at the gate, which can be a decent stake-out spot by itself.
Soon after arrival, a WILD TURKEY gobbled, and three AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were
displaying as it got later into the evening. We heard something unusual that
could very well have been a Sandhill Crane, but it was distant and I cannot be
sure. After reviewing Stokes, there are some calls they make that aren't the
"typical" rolling cry that sound a lot like what we heard. At any rate, the
bird didn't show.
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
Arlington
