The Northern Virginia Bird Club visited Occoquan Bay NWR in Woodbridge this morning. Beautiful weather for a change. The 26 birders accumulated a list of 72 species. Highlights were a king rail calling from the marsh along the wildlife drive where the road is blocked; a small flock of rusty blackbirds in the same spot; a common loon that flew over the parking lot while we assembled; 2 blue winged teal in the pond next to the parking lot; palm warbler singing from the golf course; pine warbler along Deephole Point Road; red-headed woodpecker along Marumsco Creek; 2 barred owls calling near the entrance gate; savannah sparrow at the parking lot; fox sparrows along Bayview Drive; Wilson's snipe in the marsh near Deephole Pt.; greater yellowlegs in Marumsco Creek; kestrel in the big field along Charlie Road. We also noted lots of osprey, phoebe, and tree swallow activity, and eagles were sitting on both nests. The complete list is below.
