VA Birders,
I went to Roaches Run, across the George Washington Parkway from National
Airport in Arlington Co., this morning. Shortly after I arrived at the big
pond, about 11:30 am, an immature Bald Eagle soared overhead. Then, to my
surprise, an Osprey flew by and landed in a tree at the far end of the pond.
Waterfowl highlights were 13 Hooded Mergansers and 5 Pied-billed Grebes.
Hoodies
have wintered at Roaches Run for the past several years.
From Roaches Run, I went to Gravelly Point, on the airport side of the
parkway, where I saw 2 more Bald Eagles soaring over the Roaches Run pond; one
of these was an adult and I think the other was a different immature. I also
counted at least 50 Brown-headed Cowbirds in a flock at Gravelly Point.
