Today's walk at Dyke Marsh may have been the slowest walk in recent memory
both in terms of participants (2) and in species of birds (42), but we did
have some good sightings. A Palm Warbler was foraging with a small flock of
Carolina Chickadees and Yellow-rumped Warblers in the vegetation next to the
marina restrooms. Winter waterfowl are continuing to arrive, with a mixed
flock of 5 Canvasbacks and over a dozen Buffleheads providing a nice display
close to the shoreline of the picnic area. Great Egrets are still passing
through the area with 16 present at Hunting Creek at the start of the walk.
We scanned a small flock of Laughing Gulls hoping to find a Franklin's but
with no luck. Remember that the Sunday morning walks at Dyke Marsh are
suspended during the Christmas Bird Count season. The last walk of the
calendar year will be on December 13 and the walks will resume again in the
New year on January 10.
