This is a late post for April 20-21.
Members and friends of Monticello Bird Club led by Sarah Splaun birded
Quillen's Pond located on private land near Stuarts Draft, VA. A few
highlights were Red-headed Woodpecker, Wood Duck and a Merlin.
On the return trip along a narrow country lane, while stopped and pulled
over to allow heavy farm equipment to pass by, we heard the unmistakable
"sweet, sweet, sweet, little more sweet" coming from the thick brush
bordering the road. We were delighted when the bright Yellow Warbler
appeared and continued singing.
Not quite ready to head straight home, Pam Howie and I took the back way
taking Rt. 610. American Redstarts were numerous, several providing great
views with their bright flashes of orange. Several warblers were heard
that included Black and White, Ovenbird and Worm-eating. Pretty productive
considering it was cloudy and early afternoon.
Later that afternoon back at home in downtown Charlottesville the first
House Wren of the season showed up.
Sunday afternoon, in between rain showers a single adult Broad-winged Hawk
appeared low overhead, slowly circling. Hopefully I'll see thousands more
this fall on their southward trek at Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch
