Buoyed by the great report from the Northern VA Bird Club from this past
Saturday and our desire to bird some new areas, Rich Rieger and I headed out
early to Algonkian Regional Park. A lot of other folks were heading to work,
even at 6:30 a.m. No need to hurry, however, as a pretty heavy fog was over
the park when we arrived around 7:45. When the fog began to lift things
began to move a bit. We started at picnic area #1 and worked our way up to
the soccer field. A large flock of Common Grackles flew over when the fog
was burning off and a noisy family of No. Flickers was interacting near our
starting spot. Our next action spot was near the golf course, where we
encountered 2 Tennessee Warblers at woods edge in an unmowed plot. As we
worked toward the soccer field things began picking up. Notables included 2
Blackburnian, 2 Cape May, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and a Philadelphia Vireo
(several good views). The most active area was in the trees along the river
which were adjacent to unmowed field adjacent to the soccer field. It was
there that we saw the Vireo. We also heard (but did not see) the distinctive
"see-see-see" of 2 Golden Crowned Kinglets. We encountered another birder
who had seen a YB Sapsucker and a Redstart, both of which we missed.
