We have a phoebe on a nest under our deck tonight, beating last year's date by
one day. I haven't gotten a look inside yet to see how many eggs. It's an old
nest that gets added to and reused every year. Pretty soon it's going to be so
tall she won't be able to squeeze between the top of the nest and the bottom of
the deck board!
And a couple of other interesting things to report. We heard the FOS chipping
sparrows here at the house on 3/17. And on the same day we discovered a very
small great blue heron rookery on Hardy Rd. in Franklin County. It's on a
little tributary of the Roanoke River where it divides Franklin and Bedford
Counties. There were three nests, with birds standing on two of them. If
anyone's interested in a better description of where it is, let me know.
