All – On Saturday I came across a family of PBGR on a pond outside of
Lexington. The adult grebes had been on the pond in May, but I assumed they
would continue their migration. Much to my surprise, they have 5 fairly large
young. This is the first confirmed breeding record for Rockbridge Co. JJ
Murray in his Birds of Rockbridge Co. noted a courting pair in 1931 on a local
pond, but he did not indicate any confirmed nesting attempt. Barry Kinzie
notes in his Birds and Birding the Roanoke Valley that there was one suspected
nesting/pairing in 1976 on the James River. Here is a link to my Flickr
