For the second time in the last few years, I have noticed that the Pileated
Woodpeckers in my area (old growth forest with no changes to environment)
have disappeared, and for many months. This happened before during an
extremely dry summer, where they disappeared totally, and then returned some
many months later. In this most recent occurrence, they have been totally
gone since this past mid-summer. I have not seen a single Pileated!
Formally, I would have five to 15 sighting in a single day.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any known reason(s) for this sort of
departure to happen?
