My husband's aunt died two weeks ago. After the funeral, having had my
fill of death and dying, I sat at the window to watch the backyard
activity. A pileated woodpecker soon arrived and began jackhammering
his way through a dead log. An audience of robins quickly gathered. An
hour later, the log was pulverized, the woodpecker was sated, and the
robins moved in for the dregs.
It was wonderful to see the cycle of life through the mundane activities
of the so-called "lesser" creatures.
