Hey all, today while working just east of the Blackwater River swamp forest
near the state line in Suffolk I noted a fly-over flock of approximately 10
Pine Siskins. Also of note was a very vocal Blue-headed Vireo and at least 2
lingering House Wrens in the area.
Twice upon returning to the vehicle I flushed an Eastern Phoebe that was intent
on driving off its reflection in the window as it perched on the side-view
mirror, fluttered at the window, and gave agitated calls and sang. I only
recall seeing this behavior in resident species during the breeding season.
About a week ago I noted some large blackbird flocks in the area at dusk, with
a careful approximation of some 30,000 Common Grackles comprising the bulk of
the flock. I noted a sharp reduction in the number of blackbirds there today,
so am wondering if they have moved from the area. I did notice an uptick in the
robin flight at dusk today.
