I visited Possum Pt and Cockpit Pt Roads (The Point) in Dumfries this morning.
Most of the stops were very quiet, but a couple of lively areas resulted in 10
warbler species, and I totaled 70 species in about 3 hours of birding. The
first good area was near the pond at the base of the ash pond dam, where I
found blackburnian, Tennessee, yellow, and yellow-throated warblers, orchard
oriole, blue grosbeak, and eastern kingbird. The second good spot was at the
bottom of the hill on Cockpit Pt Road, where a mixed flock contained black and
white, blue-winged, worm-eating, chestnut-sided, and Tennessee warblers,
redstart, and northern parula. Also in the area was a summer tanager. Other
notables were 2 turkeys walking in the road, acadian flycatcher, least
sandpiper, and spotted sandpiper.
