About 9:45 this morning while walking at Riverview Park in Charlottesville, I
observed a Merlin perched on the top crossbar of a "power tower" where he tried
to impersonate a Mourning Dove. I was able to discern strong vertical
streaking on the breast, bright yellow legs, and when an American Crow came
along and usurped his perch, this falcon took off across the river like a bat
out of hell. No flap, flap glide here; nothing but a constant flap and speed!
Spooky, but exciting.
