Inspired by several posts from the past week, I set out this morning in
search of warblers and other new arrivals. My results far surpassed my
initial goals: 19 species of warblers and vireos!
Locations birded:
1) Cockpit Point Rd and Possum Point Rd near Dumfries (7:00 - 8:00)
2) Leesylvania State Park (8:15 - 9:15)
3) Occoquan Bay NWR - Easy Trail (9:30 - 10:00)
4) GW Parkway at marina south of National Airport (1:30 - 2:00)
5) Great Falls Park (4:30 - 6:15)
6) Backyard in Herndon (7:00)
Results:
Parula Warbler- 25 (everywhere today and probably undercounted)
Yellowrump Warbler - 12 (most at Leesylvania and Great Falls)
C. Yellowthroat - 10 (most prevalent at Occoquan NWR)
Prairie Warbler - 8 (most prevalent at Possum Pt Rd)
Prothonotary Warbler - 4 (three near car-top boat ramp in Leesylvania, one
along Neabsco Creek just outside Leesylvania)
Yellow Warbler - 4 (all in Occoquan NWR)
Ovenbird - 2 (both in Great Falls Park)
Yellowthroated Warbler - 3 (one on Possum Pt, one on Cockpit Pt and one at
Leesylvania)
Palm Warbler - 1 (Leesylvania)
Louisiana Waterthrush - 1 (Cockpit Pt Rd, heard only)
Hooded Warbler - 1 (Cockpit Rd, 1.1 miles from intersection of Cockpit Pt and
Possum Pt, heard only)
Blue-winged Warbler - 1 (Occoquan NWR on east side of trail halfway to the
river, excellent looks!)
Black-throated Green Warbler - 1 (Great Falls)
Black-and-white Warbler - 1 (Cockpit Pt Rd, heard only)
Pine Warbler - 1 (my backyard, heard only)
White-eyed Vireo - 8 (widespread)
Warbling Vireo - 1 (GW Parkway south of National Airport)
Blue-headed Vireo - 1 (Cockpit Pt Rd)
Yellowthroated Vireo - 1 (Great Falls)
Indigo Bunting - 1 (Leesylvania - bluff overlooking Potomac)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - too many to count
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 4 (most in Leesylvania)
Brown Thrasher - 3 (Cockpit Pt and Possum Pt roads)
House Wren - 1 (Leesylvania, heard only)
Wood Thrush - 3 (all along Cockpit Pt Rd, heard only)
Hermit Thrush -1 (Leesylvania)
I never heard or saw Red-eyed Vireo or Worm-eating Warbler. Oh well.
