Hello, birders.
Elisa Enders and I braved the cold again today and
again missed our target birds. We checked out the
Manassas airport area before sunrise to look for
Short-eared Owls, but we struck out again. We did
find a very nice assortment of songbirds just outside
the airport, along Broad Run. Lots of sparrows and
other common woodland and edge birds fed along the
margin of the woods. A few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
were about. I saw more Yellow-rumpeds this weekend
then the last few weeks combined. A couple flocks of
MALLARDS were in the stream, along with a beautiful
pair of HOODED MERGANSERS. More sparrows, incl.
WHITE-CROWNED, fed near the VRE parking lot. Today
proved to be a good one for raptors, with a couple of
RED-TAILS and an adult BALD EAGLE in the area.
We again visited the Nokesville/Aden area in Prince
William Co. And again, we couldn't find a
Rough-legged. We viewed WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS in the
same area of Rte. 654 as yesterday. Elisa and I ran
into Dave White, who helped us search through the 100
HORNED LARKS that were flying back and forth over this
road and the nearby fields, for a bunting or a
longspur but we couldn't find any of those. This
flock of larks was the only one that Elisa and I saw
all weekend.
Lastly, we visited Hugo's, the roller skating rink
along Rte. 17 in southern Fauquier County where Todd
Day has been reporting a Rough-legged Hawk. Of
course, we didn't see this bird, but in about an
hour's searching we saw several each of BLACK and
TURKEY VULTURES, a NO. HARRIER, 3 R.T. HAWKS and a
KESTREL. We also spotted two R.S. HAWKS in the
Goldvein area.
Happy birding,
