After neighbor's weekend alert to possible Snow Bunting, I've been holding
backyard feeder vigil this week early morning before heading off to the
office and during my lunch hour. Still no sighting of a Snow Bunting but
the small group of Purple Finch and several dozen American Goldfinch
continue to actively feed on sunflower chips (shelless). I have been truly
amazed at the diversity and numbers showing up in our backyard to feed,
perch and bath in the small pond. On a down note, another uninvited cat
showed up inside our fenced yard three times, stalking and chasing the
ground feeders.
Feeding frenzy is more likened to dead of winter with snow on ground. Now
I know our region is not lacking in plenty of wild plants with seeds and
berries but they seem to be preferring the "commercial" grade sunflower and
peanut chips, at least in our neighborhood.
Below are some pics of only a small sampling of backyard visitors taken
yesterday. Unfortunately the Pine Siskin flew in right after I had packed
up the camera equipment. Hopefully they will return
