I received telephone call yesterday evening from neighbor who reported a
good contender for winter-plumaged Snow Bunting actively feeding at their
feeder for two days (Friday and Saturday). This neighbor is a cautious
birder and he and his wife were able to compare this bird to their Sibley's
guide. Unfortunately they did not photograph this bird; I suggested they
keep their camera handy. This is the same neighbor who reported the
Baltimore Oriole this past winter which was photographed.
For now, we are holding a feeder watch in our downtown neighborhood with
hopes this bird will make another appearance. I went home on lunch hour
today and although no Snow Bunting, I had at least three Purple Finch,
including a lovely adult male, actively feeding among good cohort of
American Goldfinch (20+).
P.S. Season's first "observed" Red-breasted Nuthatch was photographed at
Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch yesterday morning.
