Ten birders joined me for a delightful day of birding at Dyke Marsh. We
identified three Purple Finches (an adult male and two adult
females/immatures) in association with House Finches in the south picnic
area near the marina. Ed Eder spotted a male Baltimore Oriole at the same
location. As we moved into the marina, three Northern Rough-winged Swallows
flew overhead and then made a U-turn, greatly assisting us in making the
identification. A Northern Harrier flew up from the marsh. The biggest
surprises were a Red-breasted Nuthatch vocalizing from the cedars on the
Haul Road peninsula and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo providing spectacular views
from the boardwalk. The land birds made up for the lack of significant
activity in the river. The Dyke Marsh walk occurs every Sunday except
during the Christmas Bird Count season (Dec 14- Jan 5) and begins at 8:00
AM.
