I met up with Elisa Enders and we birded around Ragged Island in Isle of Wight
Co. from about 3:30-7:00 PM. There was a good showing of sparrows this
afternoon, with a beautiful Swamp Sparrow greeting me at the parking lot and
another calling from the marsh edge at dusk. We probably saw atleast 4
Sharp-tailed Sparrows, and were able to get some nice views of 2 Saltmarsh and
1 Nelson's for comparison of shape/plumage. A sparrow-type flushed and showed
clean white outer tail feathers, but we were unable to relocate this bird.
Finally, a Seaside Sparrow perched up with 2 Marsh Wrens in the same patch of
grass for solid views and another Seaside sang once at dusk.
A variety of Clapper Rail calls was heard at the end of the day, and there
was a large conglomeration of Gulls (Laughing mostly with smaller #s of
Ring-billed and Herring), Royal Terns, Brown Pelicans, and Double-crested
Cormorants feeding in the river off of the Island. A Spotted Sandpiper was
noted along the James River shoreline. Take care,
Nick Flanders.
