My Dad and I spent a couple of hours at Ragged Island WMA in Isle of Wight Co.
today. The most waterfowl I have seen on the river yet this year, I counted 74
Surf Scoter in a large group with about a dozen each of Buffleheads and Horned
Grebes mixed in. There was alot more beyond my range, and while driving across
the James River Bridge we noticed a Common Loon in the river as well. There
were 8 Dunlin feeding along the shoreline, atleast two Northern Harriers above
the marsh, and one Bald Eagle was spotted. One Osprey is still successfully
hanging around that section of river, he had a fish as he flew overhead. While
walking back to the car, we watched from the marsh boardwalk as several Clapper
Rails quickly crossed a small creek. Then, another Clapper appeared at the
edge of the creek within ten feet from where we stood, he did not seem to
notice us as he walked about in the open for a short while; great views. All
of the Rails were seen from 4:40-5:40 p.m., the tide was low and the creek with
all of the activity had virtually no water in it.
