I took advantage of the gorgeous weather yesterday by kayaking on the
Rappahannock. The Ruddy Ducks are again scattered up river and down. Mixed
into their ranks were Bufflehead, 2 Common Goldeneye (last week there were
12), Scaup, and 17 Red-breasted Mergansers. Ospreys & Bald Eagles were
omnipresent. There are 3 Bald Eagle nests within a mile that I know of but I
suspect several more. At one point there were 11 Bald Eagles circling
overhead. A flock of 12 Brown Pelicans caused a quick flyby from the
Ospreys. Pine Warblers were trilling emphatically in the tall pines along
the shoreline. I caught a glimpse of the Belted Kingfisher speeding low over
the water. After sunset the calls of the peepers were joined by the peeents
of American Woodcocks & the murmuring of the Great Horned Owl pair.
