Heard my FOS Wood Thrush this morning in the woods outside our house, just
north of Ft Belvoir. Could have been here earlier, but we were running the

Finally got my lazy self around to cleaning, filling and hanging the
hummingbird feeder this morning. Within an hour, the first hummer arrived;
so far have had both female and male at the feeder. Off to the garden shop
to get flowers now...

This morning JoAnne Pierce, Susan Stanton, and I birded higher elevations of
Bedford County (Blue Ridge Parkway south of the James River Visitor Center to
Thunder Ridge Overlook, then backtracked to Forest Road 951 down to Route 602
to Route 122). We saw/heard 11 warbler species: Parula, FOS Chestnut-sided
(early date as expected 30 April according to all references), FOS Cape May (we
saw at least 3 - early locally as expected date is 28 Apr according to the
Birds of Lynchburg and Vicinity but 25 Apr according to the Gold Book for
Mountains & Valleys), FOS Black-throated Blue (early date for state as expected
30 April in Mountains & Valleys according to the Gold Book but locally
expected 25 Apr per Birds of Lynchburg), Yellow-rumpeD, FOS Black-throated
Green, Black-and-white, FOS Redstart, FOS Worm-eating, Ovenbird, & FOS Hooded.
Other FOS species: BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (locally an early date per the Birds of
Lynchburg as expected 30 Apr but already expected in state according
to the Gold Book), ACADIAN FLYCATCHER (early date as expected 30 April
according to the Birds of Lynchburg and 5 May per the Gold Book for the
Mountains & Valleys), & SCARLET TANAGER. Complete species list with numbers
seen from eBird follows.

Our neighborhood BALTIMORE ORIOLE is back and we hope he'll nest in our tree
again. ? He has been singing nonstop since he arrived.? We loved watching the
pair build their nest last year.? And for the first time there was also an
ORCHARD ORIOLE in our yard as well!? Such a treat in our suburban neighborhood.?

Naseem Reza and myself I saw a CAPE MAY WARBLER this morning. It was in the
Reedy Creek parking lot singing. WARBLING VIREO and EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE were
new for the year for me. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER flying west over the 42nd
Street lot was a welcome surprise.

Sorry for the late post, last Thursday we were at the Great Marsh Trail in
Mason Neck, VA and observed the nest I noticed a couple of years ago is
active again this year. (I didn't make it out there during nesting season
lastyear.) Looking straight out from the observation platform across the
marsh and then follow the top of the treeline left a little ways. The
adults are usually hanging out somewhere near the nest.

Nick Flanders and I visited Weyanoke this morning from just before 0700 to
about 0830. Many of the usual species were seen. We did have two male
Black-throated Blue Warblers by the far end of the property (in terms of
distance from the entrance). They were close to the creek. One Hermit Thrush
was seen. It was a nice morning.

I was in Charles City near Shirley watching a muskrat in the canal. As
the muskrat went into the weeds, I caught a glimpse of something yellow
and finally saw that it was a bird/duck. It looked like a shorebird of
some kind...almost colored like a snipe, but it has a duck type bill.
Any idea what this is?

Also, if you are interested, I got the muskrat to give me a special
