VA BIRDers,
I started at Lake Fairfax, Fairfax Co today but arrived late for the
crossbill show that Janet Anderson witnessed. Still, it's a great oasis
park in suburbia and I noted a few interesting species such as Lesser Scaup
(first seen by Russ Taylor), 5 DC Cormorants, 4 Great Blue Herons, 3 Am.
Coots, Red-shouldered Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, E. Phoebe, Red-breasted
Nuthatch, Hermit Thrush, Pine Warbler, 4 Eastern Towhees, and 3 Field
Sparrows.
I left and visited Manassas Battlefield NP driving most of the roads; the
weather was poor as a slight drizzle and light snow showers were
intermittent. Highlight was a Red Crossbill flying W by NW from the new
Brawner Farm parking lot at about 2pm. Also noted 2 Wood Ducks in a stream
and 3 Chipping Sparrows (in fresh plumage) with 6 DE Juncos working the edge
of Featherbed Rd and generally moving northward.
