Thanks to Ed Trelawny, we were able to re-find the RED CROSSBILLS he
reported Friday. When we got to the spot on Judge Rye Rd. he told us about,
a few were chipping right overhead. We eventually saw at least 10, but there
may have been more (there was a group of 4 later that may not have been part
of that original group). I don't know what Ed had seen, but not one of ours
was a red male. All 10 that we saw had plumage typical of females. They were
very vocal, and I believe because a high wind came up right there, and
seemed to flush them, we didn't see them again. At given times, they were
actually also in West Virginia, but mostly, they were on the VA side of the
ridge. If anyone wants specific directions, please write to me off-line.
Later, along Stoney Creek, we found a single PINE WARBLER.
