I am hearing and have seen a Red-eyed Vireo singing way up in the elm tree in
our backyard today. Fleeting sight of mating Tufted Titmouse pair -- preceded
by wing-fluttering and extremely high-pitched calling by the female. Hearing
occasional House Wren song.
The Catbirds have been very much in evidence for the last several days. I saw
three in close proximity at the pond by the Long Branch Nature Center building
yesterday. I have yet to find my FOS Wood Thrush. The Eastern Towhee that had
been calling in our yard has moved on; there are still many in the general area.
I have not seen or heard any White-throated Sparrows since Friday and am
wondering if the LOS mark has passed here in Arlington.
Yesterday I heard Cedar Waxwings at Long Branch.
By the way, this spring we have an extraordinary bumper crop of American elm
seeds that have been extremely attractive to the birds and Gray Squirrels. I
have never seen anything like it. It may be a heavy mast year triggered by the
drought conditions last year? The American Goldfinches are very fond of the elm
seed bounty.
