A single Red-headed Woodpecker was seen at the Waynewood pull off on
Dec. 10, 2007, 9:20 a.m., and again on Dec. 18, 2007, 2:40 p.m.
I am wondering whether it has (or is planning to) nest in that area.
About 10 days ago I had a chance conversation with a stranger who
lives somewhere down the Fort Hunt Road corridor "half-way" to Mount
Vernon who said that he and his wife had seen a RHW in their backyard
at least twice, when exactly he didn't say.
The Waynewood pull off is at the corner of the G. W. Parkway at
Waynewood Blvd. There are about 7 parking spaces on the east side of
the GWP.

Checked out Riverside Park and several of the pullouts along the river yesterday. Riverside had two each of Horned and PB grebes. Also, about 75 Gadwall, many Bufflehead, a couple Hoodies, handful of coots. One male Red-headed Woodpecker at Waynewood Blvd.
