I spent an absolutely delightful day at Dyke Marsh in Fairfax County this
afternoon. One of the highlights was the presence of 2 Red-necked Grebes,
one molting into alternate plumage off the picnic area and another not yet
in an obvious molt off the south end of the boardwalk. Waterfowl numbers
have declined, but I did observe 20 Canvasbacks, 22 Common Mergansers, 7
Red-breasted Mergansers, 6 Lesser Scaup, a solitary Ruddy Duck, and a very
active Winter Wren along Haul Road. Song Sparrows were engaged in devouring
worms like miniature robins along the muddy path as well.
