I had a very unusual visitor to the feeder this morning. It started with
a lethargic and dingy Am. Goldfinch. My first thought was hawk food!
However, it did not work out the way I had anticipated. Usually the
little birds are picked off by Coopers or Sharpies, but not this
morning.
This sick AMGO was on the ground feeding when a Gray Squirrel came along
and with one bite put the bird out of its misery. I had never seen this
before and thought that the squirrel may want to eat the bird, but no,
the AMGO just lay there next to a little blood on the snow.
About a half hour later, the Red-shouldered Hawk that has been in the
neighborhood over the last few weeks, and had been perched in a
neighbors tree, flew in, grabbed the dead AMGO and flew off! And, it
didnt even say thank you to the squirrel.
