At Huntley Meadows today, I was startled when a large hawk flew by very close
to my head. As it flew away from me, I got a good look at a very white tail
with a large black band. I was excited, thinking it was a Rough-legged, but
when it banked, it had the orangish chest of a Red-shouldered. Except for the
orange, it didn't look like any Red-shoulder I ever saw. It patrolled around
the edge of the entire marsh, stopping frequently and hovering.
Does anyone know if these two species hybridize?
Incidentally, the hawk hung around. I saw it again an hour later, and got a
great look again, but I'm still stumped as to it's ID.
