Hello VA-Birders,
I made another trip to Remington this morning to look for the Buff-breasted
Peeps reported by Todd Day last week. I couldn't pull any out of the area, but
there is a lot of territory to cover and they could be anywhere. It's just a
matter of luck, and having the patience to scan every last inch of ground.
Several large fields were recently plowed there and nearby, so there is a
bonanza for the shorebirds. Killdeer are everywhere. I did see one UPLAND
SANDPIPER flying over one of the fields, as well as a HORNED LARK or two. I
saw the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE discovered by another birder last week perched on one
of the borders between the fields. Also of note were several BOBOLINKS heard
flying around and on the ground. They weren't giving the "complete" burbling
call, but only snippets. I saw a close GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, heard only one
DICKCISSEL, and think I heard a distant SAVANNAH SPARROW.
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
