I made a quick stop by Kingstown Lake (Alexandria/Fairfax Co.) on Van Dorn
Street Friday afternoon on my way home from work. There was a nice flock of 21
Ring-necked Ducks and one Pie-billed Grebe, along with the usual Mallards,
Canada Geese and Ring-billed Gulls. This small lake frequently attracts a nice
variety of waterfowl in the colder months. Last year a flock of about 50
Ring-necked Ducks spent most of the winter there and there were Canvasbacks,
Redheads, Buffleheads, Hooded Mergansers, Ruddies, etc. on and off throughout
the season. I try to stop there most Fridays in fall and winter on the way home
and there are frequently some pleasant surprises.
