VA-Birders,
I made a stop at the Riverbend Park meadow in Fairfax County this morning from
6:30 util about 7:45. Migrants were fairly slow, most likely because of the
clouds and fairly heavy fog. There were some MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, REDSTARTS, and
YELLOWTHROATS, however.
Other highlights included a calling LEAST FLYCATCHER (che BEK), a silent
TRAILL'S FLYCATCHER, and several PEWEES. This marks the eleventh Traill's
Flycatcher I have observed this Fall, and not one has said as much as a peep
(or Whit or Pip, as the case may be). It is getting quite frustrating, but tis
the season. There was a possible Olive-sided Flycatcher in one of the snags at
the south end of the meadow, but it was a little too far and backlit to be
sure. It was rapidly scanning the meadow and it flew away like I have seen
them fly in the past - quite direct. It is also getting late for those I
believe. There was also a WOOD THRUSH giving its characteristic series of call
notes in the nearby woods.
I also got buzzed and investigated by another RT HUMMER. It flew at my face to
within 2 inches, paused, and moved on. Best view I ever had of one, but the
third time this year this has happened to me. I have to figure out why! I
have asked others and nobody has told me this happens to them. Odd. Anyway,
