Hi VA-Birders,
I spent a couple of hours at Riverbend Park (Fairfax County) this afternoon,
looking for the red-necked grebe(s) reported earlier this week, but I didn't
see any. I started at the Visitor Center and walked a mile or two north
along the Potomac River. What I did see: several hundred tree swallows over
the river, lots of ring-billed gulls, seven or eight eastern phoebes (none
singing, though - only calling), 40 ring-necked ducks, 15 scaup, 10
bufflehead, at least 4 wood ducks, a black duck. Big flocks of blackbirds in
the woods - I'm pretty sure they were rusty blackbirds. About 100 total, I'd
say. A pileated woodpecker hopping awkwardly on the ground like a flicker.
(I think it was pecking at a few low stumps on the ground.) A couple of
cormorants on the river. It was interesting to see the ducks on the river -
the current was swift, and the ducks would hide behind little islands to
avoid getting swept downriver.
